FIX: Background processing is rescheduled repeatedly in MCMS (331328)

SYMPTOMS

If you are running Microsoft Content Management Server 2001 (MCMS) in a load-balanced cluster or on a single computer, background processing is rescheduled repeatedly when MCMS determines that another computer is performing background processing. Therefore, background processing is never completed.

When this problem occurs, the following entries may be logged in the event log: ID:1600 Desc: Background Processing started.
ID:1600 Desc: Background Processing failed to set the last processing date.
ID:1600 Desc: Background Processing performed by another machine.
ID:1600 Desc: Background Processing is scheduled to run at YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Content Management Server 2001 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Content Management Server 2001.
