SYMPTOMS

When you use the German hyphenation tool on a document that is formatted for the German language in Word 2002, your system may become unstable, and eventually you receive an "out of memory" error message.

Note If you view the Physical Available Memory counter in Performance Monitor in this scenario, you notice that the counter value decreases as you type.

CAUSE

This issue is caused by a memory leak that occurs when you use the German hyphenation tool in the scenario that is described in the "Symptoms" section.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Office XP service pack that contains this fix.

The English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do one of the following:
  • Quit and restart Word.

    -or-
  • In the document in question, switch the language from German to English and then back to German. To switch the language setting in a Word document, follow these steps:
    1. Select the text that you want to change the language format for.
    2. On the Tools menu, point to Language, and then click Set Language.
    3. In the Mark selected text as list, select the language you want.

      A check mark next to the language name indicates that the spelling files for the language are installed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
