BUG: "File Copy Error" Error Message When You Use ActiveSync to Back Up a Pocket PC Device (330781)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the ActiveSync Backup tool to back up a Pocket PC device, you may receive one of the following error messages:
File copy error It is reported that the following file cannot copy. "<Service Name>:DeleteItems" "Databases" "Date"
-or-
Backup could not copy the following files(s). To correct this error, please close any programs on your device that may have locked these files, and then click Retry. You may choose to skip these files; backup will retain any previous backup copies in the storage file.
-or-
POP3:DeleteItems Databases <date and time stamp> Database <size><Retry All> <Skip All> >

CAUSE

This issue occurs if mail is available for download during synchronization. In this scenario, e-mail information is updated at the same time that the backup process tries to save the information to a backup file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods:
  • Click Skip All, and then continue the backup process.

-or-

  • Turn off synchronization of mail services.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

How to Turn Off Synchronization of Mail Services

On the client computer, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Microsoft ActiveSync.
  2. Click the Sync Option tab.
  3. Click to clear the check box for Inbox.
On the Pocket PC device, follow these steps:
  1. Tap Start, and then tap Programs.
  2. Tap Inbox.
  3. Tap Services. If any services are listed, tap the first service.
  4. Tap Next until the Options button is visible.

    Note In the wizard, the Options button appears in step 5 of 5. This behavior varies in some Pocket PC Adaptation Kit Updates.
  5. Tap to clear the Check for new messages every fifteen minutes check box. Tap Next, and then tap Finish.
  6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 for any additional services or accounts that are listed.
