Nschmgr.ocx Leaks Memory Each Time You Create and Destroy a Stream Object (330260)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Services 4.1

This article was previously published under Q330260

SYMPTOMS

When you use an application that automates the Windows Media Services station control for administering multicast stations, and if you create and destroy the station many times (the number varies), the host application may gradually use more memory.

If the application remains open, the host application might stop responding.

CAUSE

There is a small memory leak in the Nschmgr.ocx control.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, close the host application. This seems to free the extra memory that was allocated by the control.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows Media Services 4.1.

MORE INFORMATION

Only 28 to 58 bytes of memory are leaked when the stream object is created and destroyed after it has been open for a lengthy period of time.

The Windows Media Station Service (Nscm.exe) and the Windows Media Program Service (Nspm.exe) are not affected except for the memory use of the host application if the host application is running on the same computer as the services. Additionally, the Windows Media Administrator does not appear to be affected.
