Stop 0xc000221 Error Message When You Upgrade to Windows XP (330175)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to upgrade your Microsoft Windows 98-based computer to Windows XP, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Stop: 0xc000221 Bad_image_checksum Image user32.dll is possibly corrupt. Head checksum does not match computed checksum.
After you receive this error message, Windows XP Setup quits.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if a file is damaged during the upgrade process.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, restart the Windows XP upgrade by restarting your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM:
  1. Put the Windows XP CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. When your computer starts, follow the on-screen instructions to start your computer from the CD-ROM.

    Note Your computer BIOS settings must be configured so that your computer starts from the CD-ROM. For information about how to configure your BIOS to do this, see the documentation that is included with your computer, or contact your computer manufacturer.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the Windows XP upgrade.
