COMTI Applications Fail to Run After "Nodeless" HIS 2000 Install (330033)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000

This article was previously published under Q330033

SYMPTOMS

Microsoft COM Transaction Integrator (COMTI) components that use an LU 6.2-type Remote Environment (RE) may fail to connect to the host system if COMTI is installed by using a "Nodeless" install of the Host Integration Server 2000 server package.

The COMTI component may fail with the following error message when this occurs:
COMTI Automation Exception

Source: <COMTI Component>
Error Number: 1411 (0x583)

Description: (1411) The Host Integration Server computer containing local LU <LU alias> is not active. Use SNA Manager to verify that the local LU alias is correct and that the Host Integration Server 2000 is running and accessable on the LAN.
NOTE: In this error message, the word "accessable" is a misspelling for the word "accessible".

This may affect other System Network Architecture (SNA) (non-COMTI) applications on the "Nodeless" Host Integration Server 2000 system. You can use other SNA applications on a "Nodeless" install of Host Integration Server 2000. These applications use the Data Providers (for example, OLE DB Provider for DB2) that are included with Host Integration Server 2000. Errors that are returned by other applications vary depending on the application.

CAUSE

A "Nodeless" install of the Host Integration Server 2000 package does not create all the registry parameters that are required to allow SNA applications to connect to a Host Integration Server 2000 until the SNA Resource Location Wizard is executed.

RESOLUTION

You can run the SNA Resource Location Wizard (Hisvrcfg.exe) after the "Nodeless" install of Host Integration Server 2000 completes.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

The COMTI run-time components can only be installed by means of the Host Integration Server 2000 server package (HiServer.msi). If you want to install only the COMTI components, you can do a "Nodeless" install of the Host Integration Server 2000 server package. You can perform a "Nodeless" install of COMTI by installing only the "Application Integration" feature during the installation of Host Integration Server 2000. All the other Host Integration Server 2000 features can be changed to "Entire feature will be unavailable".

If the "SNA Application Support" feature is installed during a "Nodeless" install of the HiServer.msi package, the SNA Resource Location Wizard is executed at the end of the installation process. The "SNA Application Support" feature is not required when you do a "Nodeless" install for COMTI support. However, if this feature is installed, the "SNA Service" feature available as an option under "SNA Application Support" must not be installed. The SNA services that are installed as part of the "SNA Service" feature are not required for COMTI-only installations.

If the "SNA Application Support" feature is not installed during a "Nodeless" install of the HiServer.msi package, the SNA Resource Location Wizard is not executed at the end of the installation process. The SNA Resource Location Wizard is available on the Host Integration Server Applications and Tools program menu.

For unattended or "silent" installations of a "Nodeless" install of Host Integration Server 2000, an initialization file (.inf) is used to configure Host Integration Server 2000 clients and Host Integration Server 2000 servers. You must also execute the SNA Resource Location Wizard to correctly add the registry parameters and the configuration options that are specified in the initialization file when you do a "Nodeless" install.

For more information about unattended installations, see "Automating Setup" under Installation and Configuration in the Host Integration Server 2000 Online Books.
