"Hardware Environment Conflict" If No 68881 or 68020 (33299)

This article was previously published under Q33299

SUMMARY

A "Hardware environment conflict" error message displays at run time if an application is compiled with the "Generate 68020 Code" and/or "Generate 68881 Code" compile options and then run on a Macintosh other than a Macintosh II.

The "Generate 68020 Code" option produces instruction codes that are specific to the 68020 processor. The 68020 chip is the next- generation microprocessor in the 68000 family.

The 68881 chip is a math coprocessor. For programs that perform floating-point arithmetic, the "Generate 68881 Code" option will enhance the speed of execution. If the program primarily uses integer arithmetic, this option will not improve program performance.
