Web site does not open when you click hyperlink in Outlook 2002 e-mail message (329925)

SYMPTOMS

When you click a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) hyperlink to a Web site, you may experience either of the following symptoms:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer does not start, so the Web site does not open.

    -or-
  • Internet Explorer starts, but the wrong Web site opens.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if a third-party program changed any of the values in the Editing action for type: URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol dialog box.

RESOLUTION

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
  2. On the Tools menu (or the View menu), click Folder Options.
  3. Click the File Types tab, and then scroll down through the list of Registered file types to locate the following item:

    Extensions - File Types
    ------------------------------
    (NONE) URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol

    NOTE: The (NONE) URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol item appears about fourteenth from the top of the list. Do not confuse the (NONE) URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol item with the URL Internet Shortcut item.
  4. Click to select (NONE) URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol, and then click Advanced (or Edit).
  5. In the Actions box, click open, and then click Edit.

    The Editing action for type: URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol dialog box appears and displays the following information:
    • Action - open
    • Application used to perform action - "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome
    • Use DDE - Check box selected.
    • DDE Message - "%1",,-1,0,,,,
    • Application - IExplore
    • DDE Application Not Running - This box should be empty.
    • Topic - WWW_OpenURL
  6. If any of the values in the Editing action for type: URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol dialog box are different from the values in step 5, change those values to match step 5.
