Error Message: Stop 0x000000E3 RESOURCE_NOT_OWNED (329868)

SYMPTOMS

When you use your Windows 2000 Server-based system, you may receive a STOP error message (on a blue screen) similar to the following:
STOP 0x000000E3 RESOURCE_NOT_OWNED

CAUSE

This issue may occur if a Hewlett-Packard (HP) printer driver that contains the Hpbfff2.dll file is installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, update your system to the printer driver included on the Windows 2000 Server CD-ROM. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. On the File menu, click Server Properties.
  3. Click the Drivers tab.
  4. In the Installed printer drivers box click the HP driver that uses the Hpbfff2.dll file, click Remove, and then click OK.

    NOTE: To determine which files a driver is using, click the driver in the Installed printer drivers box, and then click Properties. The Driver Properties dialog box lists the files used by the driver.
  5. Reinstall the printer by using the drivers included on the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each printer driver using the Hpbfff2.dll file.
  7. Click Close.
