PRJ2000: You Cannot Start the PERT Analysis Tools on the PERT Analysis Toolbar (329856)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start one of the Program, Evaluation, and Review Technique (PERT) Analysis tools that are included with Project 2000 by clicking a button on the PERT Analysis toolbar, the tool may not start. This symptom occurs when you are logged on as a user who is not a member of the Administrators group. When you log on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group, you can start and use the PERT Analysis tools.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the following key is missing from the Windows registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\MS Project\Addins

This may occur if you do not have the appropriate permissions to write to the registry. When you log on to the computer and start Project 2000 for the first time, this registry key is created in your user profile. If you do not have the correct permissions to write to the following registry key, the Microsoft Project entry is not added:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office

Because of this, you cannot use the PERT Analysis tools that are included with Project 2000.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

Delete the User Profile

Delete the profile of the user who cannot use the PERT Analysis tools. When you do so, Windows creates a new profile for the user the next time the user logs on to the computer. To delete a user profile:

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Log on to the computer as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click System.
  3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under User Profiles.
  4. In the Profiles stored on this computer box, click the user profile that you want to delete, and then click Delete.
  5. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the deletion.
  6. Click OK, click OK, and then close Control Panel.
  7. Log off the computer, and then log on as the user. Windows then creates a new profile for the user.
  8. Start Project 2000, and then make sure that you can start and use the PERT Analysis tools.

Import the Registry Key Settings

Export the following registry key from the administrator's profile to a .reg file, and then import the .reg file to the user's profile:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\MS Project\Addins

To do this:

  1. Export the registry key from the Administrator's profile to a .reg file:
    1. Log on to the computer as an administrator.
    2. Click Start, and then click Run.
    3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
    4. Locate and then click the following registry key:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\MS Project\Addins

    5. On the File menu, click Export.
    6. In the Export Registry File dialog box, specify a name and location where you want to save the file, and then click Save.
    7. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
  2. Import the .reg file to the user's profile:
    1. Log off the computer as administrator, and then log on as the user.
    2. Click Start, and then click Run.
    3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
    4. On the File menu, click Import.
    5. In the Import Registry File dialog box, click the .reg file that you exported in step 1, and then click Open.
    6. Click OK when you receive the message that the import operation was successful.
    7. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
  3. Start Project 2000, and then make sure that you can start and use the PERT Analysis tools.

MORE INFORMATION

PERT analysis is a process by which you evaluate a probable outcome based on the following three scenarios:
  • Best-case scenario
  • Expected-case scenario
  • Worst-case scenario
The outcome may be the duration of a task, its start date, or its finish date.

To use the PERT Analysis tools that are included with Project 2000, point to Toolbars on the View menu, and then click PERT Analysis. On the Pert Analysis toolbar, click the Pert Analysis tool that you want to use.
