Screen Resolution Incorrect When External Display Device Is Attached (329844)

This article was previously published under Q329844 SYMPTOMS When a lower-resolution display (such as television or
older monitor) is attached to a system with the following configuration, the
screen resolution in the Display Properties applet may be incorrect: - The computer runs Windows 2000.
- A multi-headed display adapter is installed.
- The clone-view or dual-view feature is turned on so that
the secondary monitor is an exact duplicate of the primary monitor.
For example, if you attach a television with a maximum
resolution of 1024 x 768 to a notebook with a maximum resolution of 1600 x
1200, after you turn on the dual-view feature, the screen resolution slider bar
may only go from 640 x 480 to 1024 x 768, and nothing higher than this is
available. CAUSE This behavior occurs because Windows 2000 does not support
clone-view or dual-view capability if you use a multi-headed video card. The
video card manufacturer may support the dual-view feature in the driver.
STATUSThis
behavior is by design. Windows 2000 does not support the
dual-view or clone-view feature, but programmers can develop drivers that
support this option. MORE INFORMATION This limitation applies to all video adapter manufacturers.
Manufacturers can build support into their drivers for Windows 2000.
