"STOP 0x00000050" Error Message in Stac97.sys After You Upgrade Your Panasonic Toughbook to Windows XP Service Pack 1 (329832)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a Panasonic Toughbook Light CF-R1P Series or Panasonic Toughbook CF-M34N Series portable computer that uses the Intel 440MX chipset, you may receive a STOP error message similar to the following on a blue screen:
STOP 0x00000050 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA
NOTE: The parameter values may be different on your computer, but a memory dump analysis indicates that the error message is based in Stac97.sys.

After you receive the error message, the computer may automatically restart. You may find that you can restart the computer only in Safe mode.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  • The computer uses the SigmaTel AC'97 audio codec.

    -and-
  • One of the following versions of the audio codec driver is installed on the computer:

    SigmaTel AC'97 Codec version 5.10.7144.0
    SigmaTel AC'97 Codec version 5.10.7170.0

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, start the computer in Safe mode, and then update the Intel audio codec driver for the SigmaTel audio codec to the latest version. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. To restart the computer in Safe mode:
    1. Restart the computer.
    2. When you receive the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press F8.
    3. On the Windows Advanced Option menu, use the ARROW keys to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
    4. If you are using a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select Microsoft Windows XP Professional in the list that is displayed, and then press ENTER.
  2. Update the audio codec driver. To do so:
    1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
    2. Expand Device Manager, and then in the right pane, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    3. Right-click Intel(r) AC'97 Audio Controller - SigmaTel Codec, and then click Update Driver.
    4. Click Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), and then click Next.
    5. Click Don't search. I will choose the driver to install, and then click Next.
    6. Click to select the Show compatible hardware check box, click Intel(r) AC'97 Driver Audio Controller, and then click Next.
    7. Click Finish, and then click OK.
    8. Shut down and then restart the computer.

WORKAROUND

To prevent this issue from occurring, update the Intel audio codec driver for the SigmaTel audio codec before you install Windows XP SP1. To update the audio codec driver, follow step 2 in the "Resolution" section of this article.
