How to Download and Install the Update
IMPORTANT: The installation of the update that is described in this article requires that your version of Microsoft Windows Installer be 2.0 or later. For additional information about this requirement, see the "Windows Installer 2.0 Update Requirements" section of this article.
Client Update
IMPORTANT: Before you install the client update, you must have Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2) installed. For additional information about how to install Office XP SP-2, click the article number below

If you installed Excel from a CD-ROM, you have the following two options:
- Use the Office Product Updates Web site to automatically install all of the latest updates that includes all available service packs and public updates.
- Install only the Excel 2002 Update, by following the steps described later in this article.
NOTE: Microsoft recommends that you install the client update by using the Office Product Updates Web site. The Office Product Updates Web site detects your particular installation of Microsoft Office and prompts you to install exactly what you need to make sure that your Office installation is completely up-to-date.
Office Product Updates Web Site
To have the Office Product Updates Web site detect the required updates that you must install on your computer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
After detection is complete, you receive a list of recommended updates for your approval. Click
Start Installation to complete the process.
Install Only the Excel 2002 SP-2 Update: October 16, 2002
Follow these steps to download and install the client update:
- Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
- Click Save to save the Exc1003.exe file to the selected folder.
- In Windows Explorer, double-click exc1003.exe.
- Click Yes if you receive the prompt to install the update.
- Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
- Insert your Office CD-ROM if prompted to do so, and then click OK.
- When you receive a message that indicates the installation was successful, click OK.
NOTE: After you install the Excel 2002 SP-2 Update: October 16, 2002, you cannot remove it.

Administrative Update
NOTE: Before you install the administrative update by using the steps in this article, verify that your administrative installation point has Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1) or Office XP SP-2 installed. If you installed Microsoft Excel 2002 from a server location, the server administrator must update the server location with the administrative public update and deploy that update to your computer.
If you are the server administrator, follow these steps to download the
administrative update:
- Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
- Download the file to your desktop.
- In Windows Explorer, double-click exc1003a.exe.
- Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
- In the Please type the location where you want to place the extracted files box, type C:\exc1003a, and then click OK.
- Click Yes when you are prompted to create the folder.
- If you are familiar with the procedure for updating your administrative installation, click Start, click Run, and then type the following command in the Open box
msiexec /a Admin Path\MSI File /p C:\exc1003a\MSP File SHORTFILENAMES=TRUE
where Admin Path is the path to your administrative installation point (for example, C:\Excel2002),
where MSI File is the .msi database package (for example, ProPlus.msi), and
where MSP File is the name of the public administrative installation update (for example, EXCELff.msp). - To deploy the update, on the client workstations click Start, click Run, and then type the following command in the Open box
msiexec /i admin path\MSI file REINSTALL=EXCELFiles REINSTALLMODE=vomu
where admin path is the path to your administrative installation point (for example, C:\OfficeXP), and
where MSI file is the MSI database package (for example, ProPlus.msi).
NOTE: To reinstall all Microsoft Office XP components on the client computer, use REINSTALL=ALL.

How to Determine Whether the Update Is Installed

Windows Installer 2.0 Update Requirements
The installation of the Excel 2002 SP-2 Update: October 16, 2002 requires that your version of Microsoft Windows Installer be 2.0 or later. Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP-3) and Microsoft Windows XP include this version of the Windows Installer. Security: Users Are Not Notified When a Maliciously Formed Workbook Contains Links to External Data
This update permits the
Ask to update automatic links option to override any attempts from a malicious user to suppress the warning dialog that appears in a Microsoft Excel workbook when a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet contains links to external data.
IMPORTANT: If the
Ask to update automatic links option in not turned on (enabled), you are still vulnerable to the security issue that is described in this article. To configure the
Ask to update automatic links option in Excel, click
Options on the
Tools menu, and then click the
Edit tab.
