"RPC Server Is Unavailable" Error Message When You Try to Establish a Trust Between Domains (329705)

This article was previously published under Q329705 SYMPTOMSWhen you try to establish a trust between Windows 2000
domains, you receive an error message similar to one of the following: RPC server was unavailable Information from the primary domain
controller name for the domain cannot be obtained
because the RPC server is unavailable. CAUSE This issue occurs because the DNS service cannot locate
server resources on the domain with which you are trying to establish the
trust. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, add a secondary DNS zone to support
name resolution. To do so, follow these steps:
- In the DNS Manager, right-click Forward lookup
zone, and then click New Zone.
- In the New Zone Wizard, click
Next.
- Under Zone Type, click Standard
secondary, and then click Next.
- Type a name for the zone, and then click
Next.
- Type the IP address of the DNS zone that you want to
add.
- Confirm the information, and then click
Finish.
