This article was previously published under Q329684 SYMPTOMSWhen you try to play back content that has been encoded with
version 9 codecs and that has been encrypted by using Windows Media Rights
Manager (WMRM), the content may not play back .When the Windows Media Player tries to play back content for
which it does not have the codecs, it automatically tries to download and
install the required codecs. Earlier versions of the player experience an error
before they can download the codecs for playback.

not occur if the version 9 codecs have already been downloaded or installed on
the system. To work around this problem, use one of the following
methods:
- Visit the following Microsoft Web site and install the
latest version of the Windows Media Player:
- Visit the following Microsoft Web site and install the
latest version of the Windows Media Codecs:
- Play a piece of version 9 encoded content that has not gone
through the WMRM process so that the codecs download automatically.
If you are an internet content provider (ICP) who is trying to
distribute version 9 WMRM-protected content, it is recommended that you create
a playlist that will first play a piece of unprotected version 9 content so
that the automatic codec download occurs. <ASX version = "3.0"> <Entry> <Ref
