  • Microsoft Internet Information Services 5.0

This article was previously published under Q329644

SYMPTOMS

When you restore a metabase backup in the Internet Information Services (IIS) Management Console, the application names are not restored. This does not affect the functionality of IIS.

WORKAROUND

Do not restore the metabase backup from the IIS Management Console. Instead, follow these steps:
  1. Use the iisreset /stop command to stop IIS.
  2. Manually replace the Metabase.bin file with the backup version from Windows Folder\System32\Inetsrv\Metaback. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Locate the backup file in the Windows Folder\System32\Inetsrv\Metaback folder. By default, the file name format is Backup.mdo.
    2. Change the name of this backup file to Metabase.bin, and then copy this file to the Windows Folder\System32\Inetsrv folder to replace the existing file.
  3. Use the iisreset /start command to start IIS again.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Although the application name is saved correctly in the backup process, it is removed when you restore from the IIS Management Console.
