XADM: 'RCPT TO' Command Generates 'Mailbox Full' Message After 20 KB of Messages (329608)

When you click to clear the Limit message size to (KB) check box on the Messages tab of the Windows 2000 Server Default SMTP Virtual Server Properties dialog box (this sets the MaxMsgSize value to zero), the default message size is set to 2,048. However, after the storage space of the Drop folder on the server exceeds a total of 20 kilobytes (KB), all RCPT TO commands generate the following error message:
452 4.2.2 Mailbox full
This symptom occurs although you expect the Drop folder to hold 2,048 KB of messages before the mailbox full message occurs.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because the Windows 2000 Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) MaxMsgSize=0 setting uses an incorrect default value.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, set mailbox message limits to a higher value:
- Start Internet Services Manager. To do this, click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Services Manager.
- Expand *ServerName, right-click Default SMTP Virtual Server, and then click Properties, where ServerName is the name of the Web server.
- Click the Messages tab, and then click to select the Limit message size to (KB) check box.
- In the box that corresponds to Limit message size to (KB), type the size to which you want to limit messages. For example, type 4096.
- Click Apply, and then click OK.
- Quit the Internet Information Services snap-in.
