XADM: Exchange 2000 Active Directory Connector May Remove Proxy Addresses on Exchange Server 5.5 (329498)

When you use the Active Directory Users and Computers console in the Exchange 2000 version of Active Directory Connector (ADC) to replicate changes that have been made to an existing user whose mailbox resides on a Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 computer, the e-mail addresses for the user may be lost.
CAUSE
This issue occurs because the Recipient Connection Agreement is set up for one-way replication from Active Directory to Exchange Server.

When you create a new user in Active Directory Users and Computers, the proxyAddresses attribute is empty unless the Exchange 2000 Recipient Update Service or another e-mail address generation service is running. If you have not deployed at least one Exchange 2000 server, the Recipient Update Service is not installed.
When the ADC first replicates this new user information to Exchange Server, Exchange Server notes that a new mailbox has been created, and because no e-mail addresses are generated, Exchange Server generates the e-mail addresses.
However, because the Connection Agreement is only one way, from Active Directory to Exchange Server, the changes that occurred on Exchange Server are not replicated back to Active Directory and the directories are left out of synchronization.
Based on this configuration, when the ADC replicates again, the addresses are lost because the Active Directory copy of the object does not have the e-mail addresses, and therefore the directory service of Exchange Server notes the absence of the proxyAddresses attribute as a change.
Therefore, a two-way connection must be established so that the e-mail addresses from Exchange Server are replicated back to Active Directory.
