OFFXP: Menus Open Without User Input (329381)

SYMPTOMS

When you use an Office XP program, the File, Edit, or View menus may open and close without keyboard or mouse input from you.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you turn on speech recognition or text services in any of the programs that are listed at the beginning of this article.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, turn off speech recognition or text services. To do this, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

Turn off the microphone. To do this, click Microphone on the Language bar.

Method 2

Turn off text services. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the Language bar.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. In the Preferences box, click Language Bar.
  4. Click to select the Turn off advanced text services check box.
  5. Click OK, and then click OK to confirm your selection.

Method 3

Remove the speech recognition feature from Office XP. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft Office XP version, where version is your version of Office XP.
  4. Click Change, make sure that the Add or Remove Features option is selected, and then click Next.
  5. Under Features to install, expand Office Shared Features, and then expand Alternative User Input.
  6. Click the arrow next to Speech, and then click Not Available.
  7. Follow the steps on the screen to finish removing speech recognition.

Method 4

Remove handwriting recognition as a text service from Windows XP Professional. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Regional and Language Options.
  2. Click the Languages tab.
  3. Under Text services and input languages, click Details.
  4. Under Installed services, find the language for which you want to remove handwriting as a text service, and then click Handwriting Recognition.
  5. Click Remove, and then click OK two times.
NOTE: When you remove handwriting recognition, it is not deleted from your hard disk. However, it is removed as a text service and is no longer loaded into memory. You can add or remove handwriting recognition again.
