256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry
SYMPTOMS
When you try to upgrade from Microsoft Office 97 to Office 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Error 1606: can't access network path UNC path or local file system path
After you receive this message, the upgrade process does not continue.
RESOLUTION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.
To resolve this issue, edit the registry setting that incorrectly identifies the location of the My Documents folder. To do so, start Registry Editor, and then right-click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
Search for the path that appears in the error message. For example, if you received the following error message during Setup, search for
\\OfficeServer:
Error 1606: cant access network path \\OfficeServer
After you locate a subkey that contains the path that is causing the
error, modify the value data of the subkey. To do so, type
drive:\Documents and Settings\UserProfilename\My Documents, where
drive is the drive on which Windows is installed, and
UserProfilename is the name of your user profile. If the value data already contains the correct information, make sure that the value does not contain any typos or incorrect punctuation. Repeat this process for each subkey you find. Right-click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Search for the path that appears in the error message. For example, if you received the following error message during Setup, search for
\\OfficeServer:
Error 1606: cant access network path \\OfficeServer
After you locate a subkey that contains the path that is causing the
error, modify the value data of the subkey. To do so, type
