SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) or Service Release 1a (SR-1a), you may receive a prompt to insert a Microsoft Word 2000 CD-ROM that you may not have.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the Data1.msi file is missing or is damaged. The Data1.msi file is located on the Microsoft Works 2000 CD-ROM, which is included in the Microsoft Works Suite 2000 software package.

RESOLUTION

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To resolve this issue, remove Office 2000, remove Word 2000, reinstall Office 2000, and then install Office 2000 SR-1 or SR-1a. To do so, follow the steps in the "Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility" section, and then follow the steps in the appropriate section for your operating system.

Part 1: Remove Office 2000

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Installer Clean Up.
  2. Click the program that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
  3. Click OK, and then click Exit.

Part 2: Remove the version of Word that is included with Works Suite 2000

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Installer CleanUp.
  2. In the Windows Installer Clean Up dialog box, click Microsoft Word 2000, and then click Remove.
  3. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the removal process.

Part 3: Reinstall Office 2000

  1. Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you insert your Office 2000 CD-ROM.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Install to install Office 2000.
  5. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation process.

Part 4: Install Office SR-1/SR-1a

  1. Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you insert your Office 2000 SR1 CD-ROM.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. In Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Install to install Office 2000.
  5. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation process.

Your computer is running Microsoft Windows XP

Part 1: Remove Office 2000

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft Office 2000, and then click Remove.
  4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the removal process.

Part 2: Remove Word from the Works Suite

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft Word 2000, and then click Remove.
  4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the removal process.

Part 3: Remove all registry keys that are associated with Office 2000

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. In Registry Editor, right-click the following registry key, and then click Delete:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\Office GUID

  4. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  5. Repeat this process to delete each of the following registry keys:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Products\OfficeGUID

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Installer\Products\Office GUID

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Office GUID

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer

    Note To locate the correct GUID for Microsoft Office or Microsoft Works you must select each GUID, and then locate the ProductName entry in the right pane. The value of the ProductName entry identifies which program the GUID is for.
  6. Quit Registry Editor.

Part 4: Remove all folders that are associated with Office 2000

  1. Start Microsoft Windows Explorer.
  2. Right-click the following folder, and then click Delete:

    drive where Office is installed:\Program Files\Microsoft Office

  3. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  4. Repeat this process to delete each of the following folders:
    • drive where Office is installed:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery
    • drive where Office is installed:\Windows\Msagent

Part 5: Reinstall Office

  1. Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you insert your Microsoft Office CD-ROM.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs.
  4. In the left pane, click Add New Programs.
  5. In the right pane, click CD or Floppy.
  6. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation process.

Part 6: Install Office SR-1 or SR-1a

  1. Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you insert your Microsoft Office SR-1 or SR-1a CD-ROM.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs.
  4. In the left pane, click Add New Programs.
  5. In the right pane, click CD or Floppy.
  6. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation process.
