WD2000: Error Message When You Open a Word Document (329365)

When you try to open a Word document, you may receive the following error message:
Winword caused a General Protection Fault in module USER.EXE
CAUSE
This issue may occur if either of the following conditions exist:
- The Normal.dot template file is damaged.
- The Word in Works Suite add-in program that is included with Microsoft Works Suite 2000 is installed on your computer, and the add-in program is damaged.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue: NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps. - If Word 2000 is running, quit Word 2000.
- Click Start, and then click Search.
- Click All files and folders.
- In the All or part of the file name box, type Normal.dot, click the drive on which Windows is installed in the Look in box, and then click Search.
- In the search results pane, right-click the Normal.dot file, and then click Rename.
- Type Oldnormal.dot, and then press ENTER.
- Quit the Search tool.
- Start Word 2000, and then open a document. If the issue is resolved, do not complete the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, go to the next step.
- Insert the Microsoft Works Suite Disk 1 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you insert the CD-ROM to prevent it from starting automatically.
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Click Add or Remove Programs.
- In the left pane, click Change or Remove Programs.
- In the list of currently installed programs, click Word in Works Suite Add-in, and then click Change/Remove.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to remove the Word in Works Suite add-in program.
- Click Close, and then close Control Panel.
