SYMPTOMS

The Properties dialog box for an encrypted Web page indicates that the connection is not encrypted after you click either the Back button or the Forward button on the Internet Explorer toolbar.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because there is an issue with how the connection type is reported in the Internet Explorer Properties dialog box. It does not indicate that unencrypted data was transferred with the secure Web site over the Internet.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, ignore the connection type that is reported in the Properties dialog box. Unencrypted data is never transferred to a secure Web site (which uses the https:// protocol) over the Internet.

NOTE: When this problem occurs, the Internet Explorer address bar contains the correct Web site address (using the https:// protocol) and the Lock icon appears in the Internet Explorer status bar.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 (SP2), Internet Explorer 6, and Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1).
