XADM: Large Number of 1030 SMTP NDRs Are Logged in the Message Tracking Log (329312)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q329312

SYMPTOMS

Message tracking logs contain a large number of 1030 Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) non-delivery reports (NDR). However, the messages are delivered, and message senders do not receive a large number of NDRs.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true:
  • Mail is sent to a distribution list (DL).
  • The DL contains a large number of addresses.
  • One or more of the addresses in the DL are not valid addresses.
When mail is sent to a DL that contains a large number of recipients and one or more of the recipients' addresses are not valid, an NDR is generated in your message tracking logs for each recipient in the DL. This occurs even though only one recipient's address in the DL is not valid.

For example, if one message is sent to a DL that contains 1,000 recipients, and one NDR is generated for some reason, one NDR for each of the 1,000 recipients is logged in the message tracking logs. This occurs even though only one recipient actually generated an NDR. The remaining 999 recipients received the message successfully, and the sender received only one NDR.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
