The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 2002
  • Microsoft Excel 2000

This article was previously published under Q329287

SYMPTOMS

When you close a file that was last saved in a format that is not native to Microsoft Excel, you may receive the following message:

Do you want to save the changes you made to workbook name

You receive this message even if you have not made any changes to the file.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you save your workbook in a file format that is not fully compatible with all the features in Microsoft Excel. This incompatibility may result in the loss of data or formatting in the workbook, and may cause the save changes message to appear when you close the file. This feature is intended to serve as an extra safeguard against the loss of information.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
