Problems If You Use the Mpradmin.exe Tool with a Newer Version of the Mfc42u.dll File (329203)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 SP6a

This article was previously published under Q329203

SYMPTOMS

When you click the Areas tab on the OSPF Properties dialog box, the Windows NT RRAS Administration tool (Mpradmin.exe) stops responding (hangs). When this occurs, you may receive the following error message:
Dr. Watson
mpradmin.exe
Access Violation (0xc0000005), Address: 0x7902112b.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the default Mfc42u.dll file in the System32 folder has been replaced by a newer version. For example, if you install the Microsoft Visual Studio version 6 on your server, it replaces the Mfc42u.dll file with version 6.0.8665.0 of the Mfc42u.dll file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use version 4.21.7160 of the Mfc42u.dll file. This version is included with Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a (SP6a).

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem if you must use a newer version of the Mfc42u.dll file:
  1. Create a new Mpradmin sub-folder.
  2. In the new folder, create an empty "mpradmin.exe.local" file. This file tells loadlibrary to use a local version of all DLLs if they exist.
  3. Copy the System32\Mpradmin.exe file into the folder you made in step 1.
  4. Copy version 4.21.7160 of the Mfc42u.dll file into the folder you made in step 1. The newer version of the Mfc42u.dll file stays in the System32 folder.
  5. Run the Mpradmin.exe tool from the folder you made in step 1.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
