XCON: Internet Mail Service Does Not Start After Installation (329164)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5

This article was previously published under Q329164

SYMPTOMS

When you install the Internet Mail Service (IMS) on your Exchange 5.5 server, the Installation Wizard prompts you to supply a username and password to use for the IMS service. After you supply your 15-character password and complete the Installation Wizard, the IMS does not start and reports that a username or password that is not valid was provided.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the IMS Installation Wizard permits you to type a 15-character password, but the IMS only permits 14-character passwords.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, make sure that the account you are using for the IMS service has a password that is less than 15 characters.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
