FIX: Windows Media Player does not correctly detect MPEG2 content with embedded MP3 audio (328572)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q328572

SYMPTOMS

When the Windows Media Player on Windows XP plays back some MPEG2 content, the player cannot accurately decode the file, although a decompressor is available on the computer. Programs such as Windows Media Player 6.4 and Graph Edit can play back the file.

CAUSE

Windows Media Player analyzes several thousand bytes of data to determine if the content has MP3 Audio. If the player finds MP3 Audio in the file, the Windows Media SDK renders the content.

MORE INFORMATION

A valid MPEG2 file has an initial 4-byte sequence that uniquely identifies the content as an MPEG2 file. If this byte sequence is detected, the SDK hands off the content to be rendered correctly.
