Cannot Upgrade SBS 2000 Evaluation Version to SBS 2000 SP1 Full Version Without Windows 2000 SP3 (327962)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to upgrade from Small Business Server (SBS) 2000 Evaluation Version to Small Business Server 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1), you may receive the following error message at the Suite Requirements screen:
Before upgrading an Evaluation copy of Windows 2000 Server to Small Business Server 2000, you must manually apply Service Pack 3 for Windows 2000.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) has not been applied to the installation of SBS 2000 Evaluation Version. Windows 2000 SP3 must be installed before you upgrade to the retail version of SBS 2000 SP1.

RESOLUTION

  1. Install Windows 2000 SP3 by using either of the following methods:
    • Run Sp3i386full.exe from the following path on SBS 2000 SP1 CD-ROM 1:

      W2k_sp3\I386\Sp3i386full.exe

    • Download Windows 2000 SP3. For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  2. Restart the server.
  3. Start the SBS 2000 Setup Wizard. If the wizard does not start automatically when you insert the CD-ROM, start SBS 2000 SP1 Setup by running Setup.exe from the root folder of the SBS 2000 SP1 CD-ROM.
  4. When the SBS 2000 Setup Wizard starts, click Set Up Small Business Server.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
