OFF2000: "IPF in Module Agentmpx.dll" Error Message When You Try to Start an Office Program (327912)

SYMPTOMS

If you try to start a Microsoft Office 2000 program, you may receive the following error message (where ProgramName is the name of the Office program that you are trying to start):
ProgramName caused an IPF in Module Agentmpx.dll

CAUSE

This issue may occur if one of the files that are required for the Office Assistant is corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove the Assistant, rename the Agentmpx.dll file, and then reinstall the Assistant. To do so, follow these steps.

Step 1: Remove the Office Assistant

  1. Insert the Microsoft Office 2000 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Hold down the SHIFT key to prevent the Setup program from starting automatically.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. If you are in Classic view, click Switch to Category View under Control Panel in the left pane.
  4. Click Add or Remove Programs.
  5. Click Microsoft Office 2000 edition (where edition is the edition of Microsoft Office 2000 that is currently installed, such as Standard or Professional), and then click Change.
  6. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
  7. Expand Office Tools.
  8. Click the Office Assistant icon, and then click Not Available.
  9. Click Update, and then click OK.

Step 2: Rename the Agentmpx.dll File

  1. Click Start, and then click Search.
  2. In the left pane, click All files and folders.
  3. In the All or part of the file name box, type agentmpx.dll, and then click Search.
  4. In the right pane, right-click Agentmpx.dll, and then click Rename.
  5. Type oldagentmpx.dll, and then press ENTER.
  6. Quit Search, and then restart your computer.

Step 3: Reinstall the Office Assistant

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Click Microsoft Office 2000 edition (where edition is the edition of Microsoft Office 2000 that is currently installed, such as Standard or Professional), and then click Change.
  4. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
  5. Expand Office Tools.
  6. Click the Office Assistant icon, and then click Run from My Computer.
  7. Click Update, and then click OK.
