SYMPTOMS

When you restart your computer after you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 98 to Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you may receive the following error message:
Office can't start FindFast, would you like to repair this feature now?
If you click Yes, the Windows Installer stops responding (hangs). If you click No, typical computer operations resume.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • Microsoft Office 2000 was installed on your Windows 98-based computer.
  • You upgraded your operating system from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
Windows tries to start Find Fast, but Find Fast is not supported on Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
  2. Locate the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\OSA\AutoStart

    If this registry key is not present, create it. To do so, follow these steps:

    1. Locate and then click the following registry key:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\OSA

    2. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Key.
    3. Type AutoStart, and then press ENTER.
  3. Click the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\OSA\AutoStart registry key.
  4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD.
  5. Type NotFindFast, and then press ENTER.
  6. Double-click the NotFindFast value that you just created, type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
  7. Quit Registry Editor.
