Small Business Server Client Application Installer Repeatedly Starts When You Log on to Workstation (327689)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 SP1
This article was previously published under Q327689 SYMPTOMS
Each time a user logs on to the domain from a workstation, the Small Business Server (SBS) Client Application Installer may start. This occurs although the program installation process has already successfully completed.
CAUSE
This problem may occur if either of the following conditions exist:
- The C:\Program Files\Microsoft BackOffice\ClientSetup\Clients\Response \machinename\Appstate.ini file has been deleted, renamed, or has incorrect file permissions.
- The Appstate.ini file has the read-only attribute set.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem:
- Make sure that the Appstate.ini file does not have the read-only attribute set.
- Use Microsoft Notepad to create a blank Appstate.ini file in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft BackOffice\ClientSetup\Clients\Response\machinename folder.
- Assign the file Full Control permission to the Account Operators and Administrators group. Assign the Read, Write, and Delete permission to the Users group. The next time users log on, Setup starts one more time only so that information can be written to the Appstate.ini file.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
