You Cannot Install Outlook 2002 on Windows 95-Based Computers (327687)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 SP1

This article was previously published under Q327687

SYMPTOMS

You can configure the Setup Computer Wizard (SCW) of Small Business Server (SBS) 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) servers to deploy programs. For example, you can configure the SCW to deploy Microsoft Outlook 2002 and other client programs to Microsoft Windows 95-based workstations on the SBS local network.

If you configure the SCW to install Outlook 2002 on Windows 95-based workstations, it tries to do so two times. Each time, the SCW prompts you to restart the Windows 95-based workstation. After the second restart, the SCW indicates that Outlook 2002 did not install on the Windows 95-based workstation.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Outlook 2002 is not designed to work with Windows 95.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

On SBS 2000 server networks that have been upgraded to SBS 2000 SP1, you can install Outlook 2000 on Windows 95-based client workstations. To do so, use the Outlook 2000 media that is included with SBS 2000.

If the Outlook 2000 media is not available, you can install the updated Microsoft Exchange client for Windows 95 so these clients can connect to the Exchange 2000 Server computer. To obtain the updated Exchange client, visit the following Microsoft Web site: You can also use a a POP3 client, Microsoft Outlook Express, on the Windows 95-based workstations to retrieve mail from the SBS 2000 SP1 Exchange 2000 server. Outlook Express is installed on the client computer when Internet Explorer 4.x, 5.x or 6.0 is installed on the client computer. Use Internet Explorer 5.x or later for the Windows 95-based clients on SBS 2000 networks.

Outlook 2002 requires Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6a, Microsoft Windows 2000, or later. For more information about the system requirements for Outlook 2002, visit the following Microsoft Web site::
