Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a Does Not Automatically Install on SBS 2000 SP1 Client Computers (327676)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 SP1

This article was previously published under Q327676

SYMPTOMS

In a Small Business Server (SBS) 2000 Service Pack 1 network, Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0-based clients may not automatically install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a (SP6a). The SBS 2000 Set Up Computer Wizard (SCW) may not list the service pack as a component to install.

CAUSE

The SCW only deploys SP6a when other programs are configured to be deployed to the client. If the option to deploy programs was not selected when the SCW created the account for the client, SP6a is not deployed.

WORKAROUND

If you want to deploy SP6a to Windows NT 4.0 Workstation-based computers, run the SCW and select to deploy programs. By default, Internet Explorer is selected, and you not have to select any other programs. The service pack is deployed to the workstation the next time that a user logs on.

If you do not want to deploy any programs by using the SCW, manually install the service pack. The service pack is shared out on the server in the following path:

\\server name\ClientApps5\OSUpdates\NT4SP6\

In either case, you must have the correct permissions on the local workstation to install the service pack.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
