All-Numeric DNS Name Causes NetBIOS Name Error (327669)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Small Business Server 2000
  • Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 SP1

This article was previously published under Q327669

SYMPTOMS

During the installation of Small Business Server Service Pack 1, if you type a numeric label for the domain name on the New Domain Info page, you receive the following error message:
The specified NetBIOS name is not valid. The NetBIOS name may contain letters (a-z, A-Z), numbers (0-9), and hyphens.

CAUSE

You receive this error message if you use a Full DNS name that contains only numbers (no letters).

In Service Pack 2 and later for Windows 2000 Server, you can use all-numeric DNS domain names. However, with Small Business Server, the NetBIOS name is formed from the Full DNS name in this wizard. You cannot use all-numeric NetBIOS names.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, make sure that the NetBIOS name contains both numbers and letters. The domain name may be all numeric, but you must change the NetBIOS name so that it has both numbers and letters.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
