Error Message Occurs When You Try to Use SBS 2000 Network Setup Disk on Windows 2000-Based Server (327662)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Small Business Server 2000

This article was previously published under Q327662

SYMPTOMS

If you use the Small Business Server (SBS) Client Network Setup disk on a Windows 2000-based server, you may receive one of the following error messages:
You cannot configure Windows 2000 Server network connectivity with a Small Business Server Networking Disk.

-or-

A terminal server must be in install mode before you can install a program. When you use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel to install a program, this automatically puts a terminal server in install mode.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because you cannot run the SBS Client Network Setup disk on a server that has Windows Terminal Services installed in Application Sharing mode.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must manually join the server to the SBS 2000 domain. Before you can make the server a member of the SBS 2000 domain, you must have network connectivity. Typically, servers are configured with a static Internet Protocol (IP) address, but you can also use DHCP. To assign the server a static IP address, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.
  2. Right-click the network connection for your network adapter, and then click Properties.
  3. On the General tab, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
  4. Click Use the following IP address, and then type the appropriate values for your network infrastructure in the IP address box, the Subnet mask box, and the Default gateway box.
  5. Click Use the following DNS server addresses.
  6. In the Preferred DNS server box and the Alternate DNS server box, type the primary and secondary DNS server addresses.

Typically, this address is the internal IP address of your SBS-based server.
  7. Click Advanced, click the WINS tab, click Add, and then type the internal IP address of your WINS server.

Typically, this address is the SBS-based server's internal IP address.
  8. Click OK to close all of the dialog boxes that you opened.
After you have successfully configured the server's TCP/IP settings, you can now join the domain. To do so:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
  2. On the Network Identification tab, click Properties.
  3. Under Member Of, click Domain, type the name of the domain that you want to join, and then click OK.

You are prompted to provide a user name and user password for a user account that has the appropriate rights (typically the domain administrator) to join the computer to the domain.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer to apply the changes.
Microsoft recommends that you visit the Client Applications share on the SBS-based server, typically \\Server_name\ClientApps5, to manually install the client programs.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
