PRB: Cannot Access IIS 5.0 FTP Subdirectory with Netscape 4.x Browser (327566)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open an Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0 File Transfer Protocol (FTP) site with a Netscape 4.x Web browser, the contents of the root directory appear correctly. When you then double-click a folder in the root directory of the FTP site, the contents of this subdirectory do not appear in the browser, and the Netscape browser window appears to stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

Some Web browsers do not support directory listing of FTP directories in MS-DOS (DIR) format.

RESOLUTION

To access the contents of subdirectories of an IIS 5.0 FTP site while you use Netscape version 4.x, configure the directory listing style of the FTP site to run in UNIX mode instead of MS-DOS mode:
  1. In the Internet Services Manager, open the Properties window of the FTP site.
  2. Click the Home Directory tab.
  3. In the Directory Listing Style frame, click to select UNIX.
  4. Click OK.
Alternatively, follow these steps to view the contents of the FTP subdirectory if the directory listing style is MS-DOS:
  1. On the Netscape browser toolbar, click Stop.
  2. Click Reload. The contents of the FTP directory are now displayed.
