SYMPTOMS

When you try to connect to a Distributed File System (DFS) link target from a DFS root, you may receive one of the following error messages. This problem also occurs when you try to map drives to DFS roots.

If you double-click a link in a shell folder, you may receive the following error message:
Title: dfsroot on <ServerName_or_DomainName>
Text: \\<ServerName_or_DomainName>\dfsroot\link is not accessible.

The folder was moved or removed.

       [ OK ]

If you click Start, click Run, type a link path (for example, \\ServerName_or_DomainName\dfsroot\link), and then click OK, you may receive the following error message:
Title: \\<ServerName_or_DomainName>\dfsroot\link
Text: Cannot find the file '\\<ServerName_or_DomainName>\dfsroot\link'
(or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are
correct and that all required libraries are available.

       [ OK ]

If you try to get a directory listing from the command prompt, the result shows the link itself, instead of an error message. For example:

c:\>dir \\<ServerName_or_DomainName>\dfsroot\link
 Directory of \\<ServerName_or_DomainName>\dfsroot\link

link <DIR> <mm-dd-yy> <hh:mm[a|p]> link
         0 file(s) 0 bytes
         0 dir(s)

If a logon script (batch file) references a link path for a mapped drive, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following example:
Title: Windows NT Logon Script
Text: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be terminated.
Quit all programs, and then restart your computer.

If the program consistently encounters problems, click the Start button,
then select Help, Troubleshooting, and 'If you have trouble running
       MS-DOS programs'.

       [ OK ] [ Details >> ]

The program encountered an invalid page exception.
       Fault location: 0028:0009
       Interrupts in service: None

       [ OK ]

After you receive this error message, the operating system may stop unexpectedly and the following error message may appear on a blue screen:
                               Windows

An exception 0E has occurred at 0028:???????? in VxD IFSMGR(01) +
0000????. The current application will be terminated.

   * Press any key to attempt to continue.
   * Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart your computer. You will
lose any unsaved information in all applications.

                       Press any key to continue

CAUSE

These problems may occur if a link target that was a DFS root is deleted (converted back to a share) after a link to it is created in some DFS root.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Convert the link target from a DFS root to a share.
  2. Delete the DFS link, and then re-create it.
  3. Have all users log off the client computers and then log back on.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
