"The file cannot be found" error message when you click a cell in the Predecessors table when you create a cross-project link in Project 2000 (327325)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 2000

This article was previously published under Q327325

SYMPTOMS

When you create a cross-project link in Microsoft Project 2000, you may find that when you click a cell in the Predecessors table, and then click a different cell in the Predecessors table, you receive the following error message:
The file cannot be found. Verify that the name and path are correct, and then try again.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  • The project that contains the linked task is located in a shared folder on a remote computer.
  • The name of the project contains numeric double-byte character set (DBCS) characters or the project is located in a folder whose name contains numeric DBCS characters.
In this situation, all the DBCS numeric characters in the cells in the Predecessors table are incorrectly changed to single-byte character set (SBCS) numeric characters. Therefore, Project 2000 cannot locate the linked project.
