Flight Simulator 2002: Error Message Involving Module Util.dll While Scenery Indices Are Loading (327275)

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove (uninstall) Flight Simulator, remove the folder in which it was installed, and then reinstall Flight Simulator. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Step 1: Restart the Computer by Using a Clean-Boot Procedure

Start Windows by loading a minimal set of drivers and services. This process, also known as a clean boot, provides as "clean" an installation environment as possible in which to reinstall Flight Simulator. To perform a clean boot in Microsoft Windows XP, follow these steps.

NOTE: For information about how to perform a clean boot in other operating systems, see the "More Information" section of this article.

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Process SYSTEM.INI File, Process WIN.INI File, and Load Startup Items check boxes.
   
   You cannot clear the Use Original BOOT.INI option.
3. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
4. Click OK, and then click Restart to restart your computer.
5. Click OK in the System Configuration Utility dialog box that appears.
6. Click Start, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
7. On the General tab, verify that the check boxes that you cleared are still cleared.
   • If all of the check boxes remain cleared, go to the "Step 2: Remove Flight Simulator" section of this article.
     
     -or-
   • If Load System Services is the only cleared check box, your clean-boot attempt may have been unsuccessful. If you find that any of the check boxes are now selected, you may require assistance from the manufacturer of the program that automatically selects the check box (places a check mark back in MSconfig).

Step 2: Remove Flight Simulator

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
3. In the list of installed programs, click Flight Simulator, and then click Remove.
4. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the removal process.

Step 3: Delete the Contents of the Temporary Folder

1. Start Windows Explorer.
2. Locate the following folder

   Drive:\Windows\Temp

   where Drive is the drive on which Windows is installed.
3. On the Edit menu, click Select All, and then press DELETE.
   
   When the confirmation message appears, click Yes to confirm the deletion.

Step 4: Delete the FS2000 or FS2002 Folder

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type the following:

   C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games

3. Click OK.
4. Right-click the FS2000 or FS2002 folder, and then click Delete.
   
   When prompted, click Yes to confirm the deletion.
5. Close the Microsoft Games folder.

Step 5: Install Flight Simulator

1. Press SHIFT, and then insert the Flight Simulator CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
4. In the left pane, click Add New Programs.
5. In the right pane, click CD or Floppy.
6. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation process.

Step 6: Restart the Computer by Using a Normal Startup Procedure

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services.
3. Click OK. When prompted, click Restart to restart your computer.
4. Start Flight Simulator.
