The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft XML 3.0
- Microsoft XML 3.0 SP1
- Microsoft XML 3.0 SP2
This article was previously published under Q327206 SYMPTOMS
An access violation may occur in the Microsoft XML (MSXML) 3.0 parser when you format XML with long attribute values.
CAUSE
The IXMLNodeFactory interface reports the size of the attribute list by using a USHORT argument. The access violation occurs because the USHORT argument overflows when the attribute values are too long.

STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
Because this bug is in a published public interface, Microsoft cannot produce a complete fix. The hotfix described in the "Workaround" section of this article avoids the access violation because it aborts the parse and returns E_FAIL when it detects a potential "crash" situation.
