WD2000: Excel Worksheets with Links to Word Bookmarks May Not Update (327037)

SYMPTOMS

When you open an Excel worksheet, you may be prompted to update the links to Word documents that are contained in the workbook. When you click to update the links, the links are not updated as expected.

Additionally, you may experience one of the following symptoms when you open your Excel worksheet:
  • Information in the Excel worksheet that is linked to bookmarks contained in the Word documents during the update appears as zeros (000), pound signs (###), or as #NAME.
  • You receive the following error message:
    Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

When you view the details of the error message, an error signature similar to the following appears:

CAUSE

This problem may occur if there are many links from the Excel worksheet to multiple Word documents, and the Word documents contain many bookmarks.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing to further ensure product quality. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Office 2000 service pack that contains this fix.

When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
