HOW TO: Install SBS 2000 SP1 on a New Computer (326930)

SUMMARY

This article describes how to install Small Business Server (SBS) 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a new computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server.

Install Windows 2000 Server

There are three phases to the Windows 2000 Server installation: the text mode, the GUI or graphical mode, and the wizard-based installation mode. You must log on manually after the GUI-portion restart of Windows 2000 Server Setup.

To start the installation of Windows 2000 Server, start your computer from the SBS 2000 CD 1 and accept the Windows 2000 Server setup default settings.

Install Small Business Server 2000

1. When the Autorun dialog box appears, click Set Up Small Business Server to start the Small Business Server 2000 Setup Wizard.
   
   If Autorun does not start, double-click the Setup.exe file on the root of the CD-ROM drive.
2. Click Next on the Welcome page.
3. Read the End User License Agreement, click I agree, and then click Next.
4. Modify the name, organization, and computer name, and then type the product key for SBS 2000 SP1.
   
   NOTE: You cannot change the name, organization, and computer name after you finish this step, unless you install SBS 2000 SP1 again.
5. Click Next.
6. On the Automatic Logon Information page, type the administrator's password if you want to use the Automatic logon feature, and then click Next.
7. Type the company address, city, state or province, and ZIP or postal code information, and then click Next.
8. Click the country or region in the drop-down list.
9. Type the business telephone number and business fax numbers in the appropriate boxes. Type the number in the Number you dial for an outside line box (if you must dial an access number to reach an outside line), click either Tone dialing or Pulse dialing, and then click Next.
10. On the Local Network Card Information page, click the network card that you want to use for your local or internal network, and then click Next.
11. On the Server Network Card Configuration page, either click to select the default Internet Protocol (IP) address of 192.168.16.2 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 or modify the appropriate IP address and subnet mask for the local network, and then click Next.
12. On the Internal Domain Information page, enter the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for the internal domain namespace and the domain NetBIOS name, and then click Next.
    
    Microsoft recommends that you use the .local extension for the domain name to keep your internal DNS namespace separate from the Internet DNS namespace. By default, the domain NetBIOS name is the full DNS domain name, without the .local extension. 13. On the Directory Services Restore Mode Administrator Password page, type your password, type it again to confirm it, and then click Next.
    
    NOTE: Write down and store this password in a secure location so that you can access the Directory Services Mode at server startup. The Directory Services password is separate from the Domain Administrators password. You can change the Directory Services password only in Directory Services mode.
14. On the Scenario Baseline page, review the Windows 2000-related setup information, and then click Next.
    
    Setup now installs the remaining Windows 2000 Server components. When Setup completes, the server restarts. If you selected the Automatic Logon option, the server logs on and continues the installation. If you did not select the Automatic Logon option, log on as an administrator for the installation to continue. After the server restarts, SBS 2000 SP1 Setup continues.
15. On the Component Selection page, the default SBS 2000 SP1 components are listed with a check mark in the Action column. You can change the installation or removal of components and their sub-components by modifying the available choices in the Action column. Additionally, the installation path is listed for each component. You can change the folder to which components are installed. To do so, click Change Path, and then type the name of the folder in which you want to install the component, and then click Next.
    
    By default, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 is not installed, but you can add it. You can install or remove SBS 2000 SP1 components later. To do so, run SBS 2000 SP1 Setup, and then locate the Component Selection page. For additional information, click More Information.
16. If you selected Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 on the Component Selection Action column, follow these steps:
    1. On the ISA Server Cache Drives page, click to select the drive to which you want to install the cache, and then click Next.
    2. The ISA Server Construct Local Address Table page displays options for the local address table (LAT) address ranges. By default, both check boxes are selected. In the NIC name box, select the internal network card, and then click Next.
    3. On the ISA Server Local Address Table Configuration page, add an additional address range if the local network IP address range in not present in the Internal IP ranges box, and then click Next.
17. Review the information that is listed on the Installation Summary page, and then click Next.
    
    Setup prompts for the installation media and installs the components.
18. When the Completing the Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 Setup Wizard page appears, click Finish.
19. After Setup has completed, the To Do List page appears. Use the links on this page to complete the configuration steps.

NOTE: Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000 SP1 and SQL 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) are available on the SBS Additional Service Pack CD but are not applied as part of SBS 2000 SP1 Setup.
