SUMMARY

This article describes how to upgrade an existing Small Business Server (SBS) 2000 system to SBS 2000 Service Pack 1a (SP1a). SBS 2000 SP1a includes updates for security and support issues that were discovered after the product first became available in April, 2001. SBS 2000 SP1a is available by downloading from the Web, or by ordering a CD-ROM.

Note Small Business Server SP1a was rereleased on July 8, 2003 to replace Small Business Server 2000 SP1. Small Business Server 2000 SP1a contains the same updates as Small Business Server 2000 SP1, except that SP1a includes Windows 2000 SP4 instead of Windows 2000 SP3, and includes SQL 2000 SP3a instead of SQL 2000 SP2. Therefore, if you are running Small Business Server 2000 SP1, you do not have to install SP1a. However, Microsoft recommends that you make sure that you are running the latest service packs for Windows 2000 Server and SQL Server 2000.

The following discs are included with the SBS 2000 SP1a Update Pack:
  • Disc 1: Includes Small Business Server 2000 Service Pack 1a, Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, white papers, and the Readme.htm file.
  • Disc 2: Includes Microsoft Outlook 2002.
  • Disc 3: Includes Microsoft Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a, and Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 Service Pack 1.

Before You Install the Service Pack

  1. Log on as the domain administrator.
  2. Verify the minimum disk space requirements.

SP1a requires 5 megabytes (MB) of space on the drive that contains the Program Files folder, and 125 MB of space on the drive that contains the ClientApps folder. If you decide to install Outlook 2002, there must be an additional 590 MB of space on the drive that contains the ClientApps folder.
  3. Create an Emergency Repair Disk:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Backup.
    2. On the Welcome tab, click Emergency Repair Disk.
    3. Create an Emergency Repair Disk. Click to select the Backup the registry to the repair directory check box.
  4. Fully back up all of your data, including the whole system partition, the System State, database files, and user data.
  5. Stop all third-party services. Document the third-party services and their startup type, and then set the startup type for these services to Disabled.

Install the Service Pack

  1. Insert Disc 1 in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. SBS 2000 SP1a Setup starts automatically. If Setup does not start automatically, double-click the Sp1setup.exe file in the root folder of Disc 1.
  2. If Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) is not installed, you are prompted to install it. Click OK, and then follow the instructions to install Windows 2000 SP4. The computer restarts after Windows 2000 SP4 is installed. Log on as Administrator. SBS 2000 SP1a Setup continues automatically.
  3. If Exchange 2000 Server is installed but Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3 is not yet installed, you are prompted to install Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3. Click OK, and then follow the instructions. If Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3 is already installed, SBS 2000 SP1a Setup continues automatically. Note that the Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3 installation process must restart the server. Log on as Administrator. SBS 2000 SP1a Setup continues automatically.
  4. Setup displays an option to make Outlook 2002 available for client deployment. Outlook 2002 contains several performance and security enhancements that help to optimize the network, but Outlook 2002 is not a required portion of the SBS 2000 SP1a Upgrade Pack. Click Yes or No, click Next and then permit the installation to complete.

NOTE: When you decide whether to make Outlook 2002 available for client deployment, consider existing and current programs that will run on the client computers. Deploying Outlook 2002 on existing clients that are running Microsoft Office 2000 may cause problems in sending e-mail messages from the Office 2000-based programs. Outlook 2002 is designed to integrate with Microsoft Office 2002.For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  5. If Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000 is installed as a component of SBS 2000, you can install ISA Server 2000 Service Pack 1 by double-clicking the Isasp1.exe file in the Isa30_sp1 folder on Disc 3.

If the ISA Server Firewall client is installed on client computers before you install ISA Server 2000 Service Pack 1, the Firewall Client installations are recommended for upgrade after the ISA Server 2000 Service Pack 1 Setup program has completed. This upgrade includes updates and fixes for the ISA Server Firewall Client software. For additional information about how to upgrade Firewall Client files on the client computers, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  6. If SQL Server 2000 is installed as a component of SBS 2000, you can install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a (SP3a) by double-clicking the Setupsql.exe file in the Sql2000_sp3\X86\Setup folder on Disc 3.
