CSNW Experiences Delays in Opening Files on the Network (326903)

SYMPTOMS

When Client Services for NetWare (CSNW) opens Microsoft Office files, delays may occur. The problem typically occurs when you are opening files on NetWare-based servers.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because CSNW continually resolves printer names, server names, and object properties. This causes poor performance. The problem becomes more pronounced as more clients perform the queries.

RESOLUTION

The English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows XP Service Pack 1.

You can modify two values in the following registry key:

Tune the NdsObjectCacheSize value to the number of resources that you are connecting:

Value: NdsObjectCacheSize
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: number of objects to cache
Minimum: 0x0
Maximum: 0x80
Default: 0x0

Set the NdsObjectCacheTimeout value for how frequently the resources can change. Start with a value of 10:

Data: number of seconds that an entry is valid
Minimum: 0x0
Maximum: 0x258
Default: 0xa
