BUG: "Cannot Convert File" Error Message When You Use Office XP (326629)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to drag a Microsoft Word 2002 document into the ActiveSync 3.5 Explore window, you may receive the following error message:
Cannot convert file

CAUSE

Microsoft Office XP installs the converter files that successfully convert Word 2002 files in the default location, \Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync. If ActiveSync 3.5 is not installed in the default folder, ActiveSync only uses the converters that are designed for Office applications earlier than Office XP or the 2002 Office applications.

RESOLUTION

Install ActiveSync 3.5 in the default folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

If the user installs ActiveSync 3.5 into a non-default folder, the user only has support for converting pre-Office XP or 2002 documents.
