"MSMQServer Setup Failure" Error Message If You Install Microsoft Message Queuing on an Active Directory Domain Controller (326597)

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Message Queuing on an Active Directory domain controller, you receive the following error message:
MSMQServer Setup Failure / Unable to create the MSMQ configuration object in Active Directory. Error code 0x80005000

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the domain controller organizational unit name has a forward slash mark (/).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, remove all the forward slash marks from the Active Directory organizational unit name.

Message Queuing is installed on the domain controller that belongs to the organizational unit. To rename an organizational unit, follow these steps:
  • On the taskbar, click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.
  • Expand Domain Controllers.
  • Right-click OU, and then click Rename.
  • Modify the existing name by deleting the forward slash mark. For example, if the current name is MSMQ/TEST, then change the name to MSMQ-TEST.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Rename the organizational unit of the domain controller with one forward slash mark.

    To rename the organizational unit, follow these steps:
    • On the taskbar, click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.
    • Expand Domain Controllers.
    • Right-click OU, and then click Rename.
    • Modify the existing name by inserting a forward slash mark.
  2. Install Message Queuing.

    To install Message Queuing, follow these steps:
    • On the taskbar, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    • On the Control Panel wizard, click Add/Remove Programs.
    • Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
    • On the Windows Component wizard, under Components, click to select Message Queuing Services.
    • Click Next, and then follow the instructions on the Message Queuing Installation wizard.
Note If Message Queuing is already installed on your computer, remove Message Queuing and then reinstall it.
