SYMPTOMS

When you use Word or Excel, the smart tags for names, telephone numbers, addresses, and stock symbols do not appear as expected. The smart tags for other data do work as expected.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps.

Verify the Entries in the AutoCorrect Dialog Box

  1. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options.
  2. Click the Smart Tags tab, and then click to select the Label text with smart tags check box (in Word) or the Label data with smart tags check box (in Excel).
  3. Under Recognizers, click to select any recognizers that you want to add.
  4. In Excel, in the Show smart tags as list, click Button Only or Indicator and Button.
  5. Click OK.
NOTE: If this does not resolve the behavior, go to the next section.

Verify the Smart Tag Registry Keys

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedt32.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\Smart Tag

  3. Verify that you have an Action key and a Recognizer key that list the globally unique identifier (GUID) numbers for the smart tags.

NOTE: If you have these keys, go to the "Register the Smart Tag .dll Files" section.
  4. If the keys are not listed, locate the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office

  5. Right-click the key, click Rename, type OfficeOld, and then press ENTER.
  6. Quit Registry Editor, and then start Word or Excel to rebuild the key.
NOTE: If this does not resolve the behavior, go to the next section.

Register the Smart Tag .dll Files

  1. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
  2. Open C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Smart Tag.
  3. Verify that the following files are present:
    • FDate.dll
    • FName.dll
    • FPerson.dll
    • FPlace.dll
    • FStock.dll
    • IETag.dll
    • MOFL.dll

  4. Click Start, and then click Run.
  5. In the Open box, type regsvr32.
  6. Add a space after regsvr32.
  7. Drag one of the files that are listed in step 3 to the Open box. The path should read

    regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Smart Tag\file name.dll"

where file name is the name of the file from the list in step 3.
  8. Click OK, and then in the registration success message, click OK.
  9. Repeat steps 5 through 8 for each of the files that are listed in step 3.
