INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to perform a forklift update of the Internet Mail Service settings when you rebuild a server that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5.

MORE INFORMATION

The Internet Mail Service has many settings. When you rebuild a server, it may take a long time to manually document all the Internet Mail Service settings and then configure a new Internet Mail Service that uses the same settings. Instead of manually documenting all the settings, you can perform a forklift update to capture and to load most of the Internet Mail Service settings into a new Internet Mail Service when you rebuild the server.

Note This forklift process does not include all Internet Mail Service settings. We recommend that you copy all Internet Mail Service settings before you rebuild the server. The following list contains several Internet Mail Service settings that are not included in the forklift process:
  • The message size limits on the General tab
  • The routing restriction settings on the Routing tab
  • All the settings on the Delivery Restrictions tab
  • The message filtering settings on the Connections tab
You may want to perform a forklift update in the following scenarios:
  • You want to rebuild an Exchange Server 5.5 server on which the Internet Mail Service is installed and configured.
  • You want to configure two or more Internet Mail Services that have the same settings.
To perform a forklift update of the Internet Mail Service settings when you rebuild a server, follow these steps:
  1. Start the Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program in raw mode. To start the Administrator program in raw mode, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    2. At the command prompt, type exchsrvr\bin\admin /r, and then press ENTER.
Warning If you use the raw mode of the Exchange Server Administrator program (admin /r) incorrectly, serious problems may occur that may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows NT Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, or both. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that result from using raw mode incorrectly can be solved. Use raw mode at your own risk.
  2. Click Connections, click Internet Mail Service, and then click Raw Properties on the File menu.
  3. In the List attributes box, click All, and then click Extension-Data in the Object attributes box.
  4. Double-click the alphanumeric value in the Edit value box, right-click the alphanumeric value, and then click Copy.
  5. Click Start, click Run, type notepad.exe, and then click OK.
  6. In Notepad, click Paste on the Edit menu to paste the alphanumeric value.
  7. On the File menu, click Save As to save the text file.

Note The text file contains all the Internet Mail Service settings that you have to configure on the rebuilt server except for the raw properties of the Administrator's mailbox. You have to manually configure the Administrator mailbox when you install the new Internet Mail Service. Make sure that you record the raw properties of the Administrator's mailbox before you rebuild the server.
  8. Remove Exchange Server 5.5 from the server, and then rebuild the server.
  9. On the rebuilt server, install the Internet Mail Service.
  10. On the rebuilt server, start the Administrator program in raw mode.
  11. Click Connections, click Internet Mail Service, and then click Raw Properties on the File menu.
  12. In the List attributes box, click All, and then click Extension-Data in the Object attributes box.
  13. Click the alphanumeric value in the Attribute values box, and then click Remove.
  14. Copy the alphanumeric value from the text file that you created in step 6, paste the alphanumeric value in the Edit value box, click Add, and then click OK.
