MS02-041: Microsoft Content Management Server 2001 Security Update (326075)

SYMPTOMS

Microsoft has released a patch for Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) 2001 that includes updates for the following security vulnerabilities:

A buffer overrun in a low-level function that performs user authentication. At least one Web page that is included with CMS 2001 passes input directly to the function, thereby potentially providing a way for an attacker to overrun the buffer. The result of exploiting the vulnerability can be to either cause CMS to fail, or to run code in the context of the CMS service (which runs as Local System).
A vulnerability resulting from the confluence of two flaws that affect a function that permits files to be uploaded to the server. The first flaw lies in how the function authenticates requests, and permits any user to submit an upload request. The second results because it is possible to override the upload location; although the function should upload files to a folder that only privileged users can access, it can be overridden to upload a file to a temporary folder that does allow unprivileged users to call it. By exploiting the two flaws in tandem, an attacker can upload an .asp or other file to the server, in a location from which it can be executed.
A SQL injection vulnerability that affects a function that services requests for image files and other resources. By exploiting the vulnerability, an attacker can run SQL commands on the server. That is, the attacker can add, change, or delete data in the CMS database, and the attacker can also run operating system commands on the server.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that you determine are at risk of attack. Evaluate your computer's physical accessibility, network and Internet connectivity, and other factors to determine the degree of risk to your computer. See the associated Microsoft Security Bulletin to help determine the degree of risk. This fix may receive additional testing. If your computer is sufficiently at risk, Microsoft recommends that you apply this fix now. Otherwise, wait for the next Microsoft Content Management Server 2001 service pack that contains this fix.
